The Karen languages form a unique and very distinct branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. These people are made up of many groups which speak related languages, and are called, by outsiders, Karen, Kayin, Kariang, or Yang.
Their traditional clothing includes rich tones of red or blue woven into shirts and dresses. Weaving is an valued folk art in Karen culture and teach to their children and the generations after.
The basic garment of the Karen is two woven pieces of cloth sewn together to each other, and also at the sides, forming a sort of tunic. Openings are left un-sewn for the head and arms. Young people wear only a long garment of this type, married women wear a shorter tunic and a wrap skirt. Unmarried Karen women wear a long white dress. Nowadays, men used to wear only shorter tunic with a longyi or pants on the lower body. These cloth panels are often intricately woven, and may also have embroidery and/or seed-work.
This dress is for women and traditionally for unmarried women.
Design for front and back are the same since two woven pieces of cloth are sewn together to each other.
Ethnic horizontal stripes on the chest area and near edges and extra length of those red threads are fallen from those areas.
Braided cotton red ropes are sewed on the neckline, sleeves edges and extra length of these ropes are fallen from those areas.
6.5-inch long threads are braided and fallen on the edge of the dress.
Straight from shoulder to edge, no curve.
No zips and buttons.
